The Bao lab is focused on evaluating the effect of integrative medicine approaches in alleviating chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), one of the most common treatment-induced toxicities in patients with cancer. Our goal is to expand the scope of integrative medicine and to build the body of evidence to help guide the integration of complementary therapies into conventional cancer care to address poorly managed conditions among cancer patients. We are currently conducting a phase III randomized controlled trial on acupuncture for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) treatment, the goal of which is to evaluate the efficacy and mechanism of acupuncture for CIPN pain in cancer survivors. This trial is supported by the NCI R37 grant. We are also conducting an R01-funded phase III randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy and mechanism of yoga to reduce CIPN symptoms and reduce the risk of falls in cancer survivors. Both trials are scheduled to end in 2025 and have the potential to be practice changing. They would also help shed light on the mechanism of integrative medicine approaches such as acupuncture and yoga and could help move the field forward.
